BELLEVILLE, NJ – Though his team lost to West Orange in the season opener by a score of 9-4, April 4, Belleville High School head baseball coach Joe Sorce was pleased with the Bucs’ effort.
“We did some good things,” wrote Sorce in an email to EssexNewsDaily.com. “We had good at-bats against (West Orange pitcher) Chris Walker, who is going to MSU (Montclair State University) next year. We didn’t get the hits with men in scoring position and they did. We played an error-free game, which is always a good start.”
Junior Brian Defreites and sophomore Jiustino Cecere, who bat leadoff and second in the lineup, combined to reach base six times. “We’re very excited about having those two guys at the top of the lineup,” wrote Sorce. “We feel they are going to be good tablesetters all year.”
The Bucs have three players sidelined due to injury and hope to have them back soon. They are infielder Chris Amparo, outfielder/pitcher Anthony Liggins, and pitcher Owen Cuevas.
Sorce said the Bucs unfortunately have yet to get on their home varsity field.
“Hopefully the weather improves and we can get on it soon,” he said.
