BELLEVILLE – The Belleville High School varsity baseball team gave a good effort despite falling to defending Group 4 state champion Millburn, 9-3, in the season opener Friday, April 1.
The Bucs led 2-1 in the fifth inning. Senior Dustin Walicky hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and his twin, Dylan Walicky, hit a solo homer in the sixth for the Bucs.
Junior outfielder Sam Abreu had two hits for the Bucs.
BHS head coach Joe Sorce was encouraged by his team’s effort.
“The kids played well,” Sorce said. “We had some good at-bats and were solid in the field. We battled hard against a top-10 team. This is something to build on.
“The kids came to play and they are going to come to play every game,” Sorce added.
The Bucs will visit Livingston, April 4, at 4 p.m., weather permitting. They will host Glen Ridge on Tuesday, April 5, at 4 p.m. in a make-up game from Saturday, April 2. The Bucs will host Caldwell on Wednesday, April 6, at 4 p.m., visit rival Nutley on Friday, April 8, at 4 p.m.; and visit West Essex on Saturday, April 9, at 3 p.m.
