Belleville HS boys’ basketball team enjoys three-game win streak

BELLEVILLE – Alcides DosReis scored 13 points and Mohammed Yousef had 11 points to lead the Belleville High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 45-39 win at Glen Ridge on Feb. 2. Andre Velez had nine points; Dave McAllister added five points; Kayson Wilder contributed four points and Ethan Luarca contributed three points for the Bucs, who led 23-18 at halftime.

It was the Bucs’ third straight win. The Bucs won both meetings with Glen Ridge this season in Super Essex Conference-Freedom Division play. BHS beat Glen Ridge, 53-49, in the third game of the season on Dec. 22 at home.

Unfortunately, the three-game win streak was snapped with a 56-34 loss to Verona in the Essex County Tournament second preliminary round on Feb. 5. Velez had 17 points for the 28th-seeded Bucs. Verona is the No. 17 seed.

The next day, the Bucs lost to Becton, 77-70, at home. McAllister scored 27 points; Velez had 12 points; Luarca had 10; Yousef had seven; and Wilder and James Laquindanum each had five for the Bucs, who moved to a 7-11 record. DosReis also added two points.
