Belleville HS football team wins 15-14 thriller over Millburn to improve to 7-2

MILLBURN, NJ — Zier Stevens caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Cincere with eight seconds left in the game and Chris Freid scored on the ensuing two-point conversion run to lift the Belleville High School football team to a thrilling 15-14 win over Millburn on Friday night, Nov. 1, in Millburn.

The victory improved the Bucs’ record to 7-2 on the season. It marks the most wins for the Bucs since 1982 when they finished 8-2.

Freid also had a one-yard touchdown run.

Cincere finished four-of-12 passing for 54 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Derek Leigh carried 15 carries for 47 yards and Freid had six carries for 24 yards with a TD and two-point conversion.

Brian Dessources had two catches for 17  yards.

Defensively, Tobias Lopez had two sacks and two forced fumbles.

Belleville received the ball with six minutes to go in the first half, and drove downfield with Freid scoring with 10 seconds left to even the score 7-7.

In the second half, the Bucs  received the ball with 1:10 remaining at its own 34-yard line. Cincere went three-of-six for 39 yards passing and 12 rushing yards. He completed two passes to Dessources and completed the 25-yard TD pass to Stevens. It was Stevens’ lone catch of the game.

Millburn received a personal flag on the touchdown pass that moved the ball to the one-yard line. Freid scored the conversion to secure the 15-14 victory.

The Bucs unfortunately did not secure a berth in the North Jersey Group 4 sectional playoffs and will end the season against Passaic at home on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m.
