Nutley HS wrestling team crushes rival Belleville

NUTLEY – The Nutley High School varsity wrestling team crushed rival Belleville, 64-12, Monday, Jan. 4, at NHS.

106-pound weight class: Domonic Cofone (NHS) by forfeit. 113: John Hickey (NHS) forfeit. 120: Thomas Graziano (Belleville) pinned James Hargrave, 3:23. 126: Luis Ovando (Belleville) forfeit. 132: Frank DeMaio (NHS) pinned Geovanny Altamirano, 2:48. 138: Robert Duxbury (NHS) pinned Joseph Buonanno, 0:17. 145: Joseph DiPasquale (NHS) major decisioned Jefferson Renard, 12-0. 152: Darwin Pena (NHS) pinned Justin Ungab, 2:50. 160: John Zarro (NHS) decisioned Joseph Nguyen, 5-2. 170: Louis Long (NHS) pinned Giovanni Ovando, 1:57. 182: Justin Bivona (NHS) decisioned Johannes Ortiz, 8-7. 195: Gerard D’Alessio (NHS) pinned Gabriele DiPalma, 3:42. 220: Sabino Coppola (NHS) pinned Santino Imparato, 1:17. 285: Luis Abreu (NHS) forfeit.

The Raiders improved to 2-0.

NHS finished a close second place in the Gary Vittorio Classic in Parsippany on Dec. 29.

The Raiders finished with 155 ½ points, just a half-a-point behind winner Parsippany, among the 11 teams. Duxbury and Pena won their respective weight class titles. In the finals, Duxbury decisioned Jayson Parisi of Morris Knolls, 3-0, in the 138-pound weight class, while Pena pinned Vasil Cook of Montclair in 26 seconds in the 152-pound class.

DeMaio (132-pound class), DiPasquale (145) and Coppola (220) each finished second for the Raiders. DeMaio lost by decision to Tahron Sheffield of St. Benedict’s Prep, 12-6; DiPasquale was pinned by Tyler Gazaway of New Providence in 3:45 and Coppola lost by a 3-1 decision to Nick Trani of Wayne Valley in the finals.
