BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The Bloomfield High School boys wrestling team enjoyed a good showing at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s District 10 tournament at Nutley High School on Saturday, Feb. 17.
Senior Will Cordero and junior Gabriel McCulloch each took second place and senior Damian Torres, senior Trevor Frantantoni and junior Alejandro Valencia each took third place in their respective weight classes to lead the Bengals.
In the 190-pound weight class, Cordero pinned Jake Liloia of Glen Ridge in 3 minutes, 12 seconds in the quarterfinals and pinned Christian Giordano of Livingston in 5:14 in the semifinals before losing to Anderson Olcott of Delaware Valley in the final by pin in 59 seconds.
In the 285-pound weight class, McCulloch pinned Almon Galley of Belleville in 1:45 in the quarterfinals and won by a 3-2 decision over John Stockelberg of Verona in the semifinals. McCulloch fell to Brandon Toranzo of Nutley in 3:40 in the final.
In the third-place consolations, Torres pinned Saayan Kalra of Glen Ridge in 50 seconds at the 165-pound weight class, Frantantoni pinned Dominic Lapolla of Livingston in 1:32 at the 175-pound weight class and Valencia pinned Pedro Moura of Livingston in 1:07 at the 215-pound weight class.
The five BHS wrestlers qualified for the NJSIAA’s Region 3 tournament at West Orange High School on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24.
