BLOOMFIELD, NJ (updated Tuesday July 10, 9:54 a.m.) – The Bloomfield 18U baseball team, comprising Bloomfield High School players, continues to have a fine summer season.
Bloomfield, under head coach Danny Furbeck and assistant coaches Tom Gilmore and Jerry Guadabaco, defeated Montclair Kimberley Academy, 12-2, Thursday, July 5; and Belleville, 11-10, Saturday, July 7, both at Bloomfield Middle School field; and crushed Verona, 11-0, Monday, July 9, to improve to 7-2.. Bloomfield has the least amount of defeats in the Essex Division of the High School Developmental League.
This week is the final week of the regular season. Bloomfield had six games scheduled. They will host Verona on Monday, July 9, at BMS, and hosted Columbia on July 10, at Wrights Field. They have two games July 12, both on the road. The first game is at Montclair at 3 p.m., followed by a game at West Essex in North Caldwell. They also have makeup games on July 13 and July 14.
Robert Gilmore has been on a fire at the plate for Bloomfield. The rising senior had six hits in his last eight at-bats, with four doubles.
“We are definitely hitting our stride at the right time,” said Furbeck in an interview with The Independent Press. “We made a lot of progress since the beginning of the season. The pitching has been good as of late.”
