BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The Bloomfield 18U baseball team, consisting of Bloomfield High School players, enjoyed a stellar season this summer.

Bloomfield – under coaches Danny Furbeck, Tom Gilmore and Jerry Guadabasco – finished runner-up in the High School Development League Essex County Division Gold bracket playoffs.

In the final held July 18 at Bloomfield Middle School field, Bloomfield lost to Nutley, 5-4, to finish the summer.

Rising senior Rob Gilmore pitched a complete game, while Fernando Brejo hit a game-tying single in the sixth inning for Bloomfield. Rising senior teammate Jalen Spence also hit a big two-run triple.

Bloomfield went 10-3 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs. They beat Verona, 10-2, in the semifinals on July 16.

Furbeck, a 2015 BHS graduate, was proud of his team. He said that he “told all my kids after the game (that) this is the start of getting this group ready for the spring. (There are a) lot of spots up in the air, but the sky is the limit with this team. Competition within this team is what is going to bring them to the next level and actually bring them together. But the hard work has to continue through the winter and the fall.”
