Bloomfield and Glen Ridge soccer teams give good efforts in respective county tournaments

BLOOMFIELD/GLEN RIDGE — The ninth-seeded Glen Ridge High School girls soccer team gave a good effort despite losing to top-seeded West Orange, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the Essex County Tournament on Oct. 9 in West Orange.

Earlier in the season, Glen Ridge defeated West Orange in a Super Essex Conference–American Division game, handing West Orange its first loss of the year.

Meanwhile, 11th-seeded Bloomfield lost at sixth-seeded Livingston, 3-0, in the first round on Oct. 5. 

In the first round on Oct. 5, Glen Ridge advanced after winning in a penalty-kick shootout against eighth-seeded Millburn. The score was tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtimes. Glen Ridge won the shootout by a 3-2 score. Defne Zeybek scored in second half to tie for Glen Ridge on an assist from Ava Kotronis. Elettra Giantomenico made nine saves for Glen Ridge.

GRHS, BHS boys soccer lose in county tournament

The 10th-seeded Glen Ridge High School boys soccer team defeated No. 23 North Star Academy, 4-2, in the preliminary round on Oct. 5 before losing to No. 7 seed Columbia, 4-0, Oct. 7, in the first round, while 14th-seeded Bloomfield High School lost to No. 3 West Orange, 7-0, on Oct. 7 in the first round of the Essex County Tournament.
