BLOOMFIELD – Despite finishing with a disappointing 10-17 record this season, the Bloomfield High School varsity baseball team featured several players who made impressive contributions.

The following Bengals have earned Worrall Media All-Area honors:

First Team: Danny Carter, Luis Rullan, Brian Rennie, and Andrew Altiery.

Second Team: Josh Cruz and Ray Ramos.

Honorable Mention: Manny Corporan and Dylan Piacenza.

Carter, a junior right fielder, simply had a dominant all-around season. At the plate, he batted a whopping .471 (40-for-85) including five doubles, one triple, one home run,  15 runs, 33 RBI, and 11 walks. He only struck out seven times, was 15-of-16 on stolen bases, and boasted a .526 On-Base Average, and .588 Slugging Average.

Carter also possesses a strong arm in the outfield.  Several colleges have shown interest in Carter, who will take part in a showcase event at Rutgers University, June 23-25. Carter also was named to the All-Super Essex Conference-American Division First Team.

Carter’s older brother, 2013 BHS graduate Mike Carter Jr., is the Bengals’ all-time hits leader and a member of the Rutgers University baseball team, recently completing his junior year.

Rullan, a senior second baseman, also had a solid season with a .402 batting average (33-for-82) with five doubles, one triple, one home run, 27 runs, 26 RBI, 15 walks and only eight strikeouts. He was a perfect 17-for-17 on stolen bases and had a .496 OBA and .524 SA. Rullan made All-SEC-American First Team.

Altiery, a junior third baseman, had a nice breakout year with a .368 batting average (28-for-76) including six doubles, one home run, 18 runs, 10 RBI, a .455 OBA and .486 SA.

Rennie, a senior shortstop, collected 31 hits for a .373 average. He also was 18-of-20 in stolen bases and had a .458 OBA. An excellent student in the classroom, Rennie will attend The College of New Jersey.

Altiery and Rennie made All-SEC-American Second Team.

Cruz, Ramos and Corporan, all seniors, led the Bengals’ pitching. Cruz had a 3.45 earned run average, going 3-6. In 42 ⅔ innings, Cruz struck out 50.

Ramos had a 3-1 record with a 4.62 ERA.

Corporan went 1-2, but had an impressive 2.49 ERA.

Piacenza, a sophomore, also showed much promise in 26 innings pitched.

Cruz and BHS sophomore left fielder Eddie Abplanalp made All-SEC-American Honorable Mention. Abplanalp had a .250 batting average with 19 hits and 16 RBI.

BHS head coach Mike Policastro, who completed his 10th year at the helm of his alma mater, has reason to feel optimistic for next season. The Bengals have several young players who gained valuable experience. With Danny Carter and Altiery leading the way, Bloomfield has a bright future.

“We could be very good in the next few years,” Policastro said.

Policastro also direct the his 10th annual Bengal Baseball Camp, which will be held for three weeks, July 18-22, July 25-29, and August 1-5, at Bloomfield Middle School field for boys in grades 2-8 (ages 7-15).

Policastro also will help direct The Lady Bengals Softball Camp, which will be held for two weeks, July 11-14 and July 18-21, at BMS field for girls in grades 2-8 (ages 7-15). For more information, contact Policastro at [email protected] or [email protected]
