Bloomfield HS baseball team falls to Bayonne in a heartbreaker as three-game win streak ends

BLOOMFIELD, NJ –  The Bloomfield High School varsity baseball team had its three-game win streak snapped with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Bayonne on Saturday night, April 21, at Bloomfield Middle School field in a non-conference game.

The Bengals were one strike away from the win, but Bayonne’s Brian Baranok’s RBI double on a 1-2 pitch with two outs in the top of the seventh inning tied the score at 2-2. Shane Paradine then singled in the winning run later in the inning.

Senior Eddie Abplanalp was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Jamir Ramos was 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI for the Bengals. BHS hurler Robert Gilmore pitched 5 ⅔ innings of three-hit ball, allowing three walks and striking out seven in the no-decision.

The Bengals moved to a 5-5 overall record.

In the previous night, sophomore Vincent Torrisi went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run and senior Dylan Piacenza pitched a five-inning one-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead the Bengals to an 11-1 win over Glen Ridge at Bloomfield Middle School in a Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division game.

Junior Rob Reboa went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run and senior Craig Dittrich went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Piacenza also went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs. Senior Elliot Urgent went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Bengals.

The Bengals defeated Science Park, 11-0, April 17, in Newark in a division game.

Junior Kyle DiMatteo (1-1) pitched four innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. Christian Lambert pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

Piacenza went 2-for-2 with a double, walk, RBI, stolen base and two runs; Ramos went 1-for-2 with a sac fly and RBI; and Urgent went 1-for-2 with an RBI, stolen base and run scored.

Senior Manny Corporan pitched a seven-inning complete game two-hit shutout to lead Bloomfield to a 1-0 walk-off win over Verona on April 18 at Bloomfield Middle School field in a division game.

Junior Rob Reboa, who went 2-for-3, reached on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the seventh inning. He was replaced by junior Jon Guglielmino, who served as the pinch runner.

Junior Kyle Tice, who went 1-for-2 with a sac bunt, delivered the game-winning RBI double with two outs to score Guglielmino from first base.

Corporan (2-1) struck out seven and allowed three walks and one hit batter.
