Bloomfield HS baseball team falls to Verona in GNT first round

BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The eighth-seeded Bloomfield High School varsity baseball team lost to ninth-seeded Verona, 4-1, in the first round of the Greater Newark Tournament at Bloomfield Middle School field on Monday, May 9.

Senior Dionisios Bello had an RBI in the bottom of the second inning for the Bengals to tie it 1-1. Verona scored one run in the fourth and two in the sixth. Luis Rullan went 2-for-3 and fellow senior Josh Cruz allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits, striking out seven and walking three for the Bengals, who moved to an 8-11 record.

In earlier action, sophomore Ed Abplanalp went 3-for-4 with an RBI and senior Danny Carter went 2-for-3 with an RBI, but the Bengals lost at Millburn, 10-2, in a Super Essex Conference-American Division game on May 5. Senior Brian Rennie, junior Andrew Altiery and Rullan each had a hit.
