BLOOMFIELD – The Bloomfield High School varsity baseball team defeated Newark Academy and St. Mary of Rutherford.
Junior Danny Carter went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs; sophomore Ed Abplanalp went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases and junior Aldo Maldonado fired a four-hitter with five strikeouts to lead the Bengals to an 8-0 win at Newark Academy on April 15 in Livingston.
Senior Brian Rennie went 2-for-3 with two runs and three stolen bases; senior Luis Rullan was 1-for-3 with an RBI; and senior Dionisios Bello had a single and an RBI. Joe Giliberti and fellow junior Andrew Altiery each had a single for the Bengals, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
The Bengals then defeated St. Mary of Rutherford, 9-7, April 16, in the South Bergen/Essex Showdown in Lyndhurst.
Trailing 7-6, the Bengals scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Altiery, who went 1-for-3, had a safety squeeze to give the Bengals the lead. Rullan went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Rennie and Abplanalp each went 1-for-3 with a RBI; and junior Christopher Veloz went 2-for-3.
BHS lost at Livingston, 5-4, April 18, to move to a 4-5 record. Trailing 4-2, Livingston scored two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh for the walk-off win. Roger Garcia had a double, triple and three RBI; Altiery and Bello each had two hits and senior Jose Cruz had an RBI.
In earlier action, the Bengals lost to Bayonne, 11-5, April 10. Carter went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks; and Abplanalp, Altiery and Veloz each had one RBI. Rennie went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs and Rullan scored twice.
BHS fell to Belleville, 3-0, Thursday night, April 14, at Bloomfield Middle School field. Altiery and Rennie each went 2-for-3; Carter had a double and sophomore Manny Corporan had a single.
