BLOOMFIELD – The Bloomfield High School varsity baseball team, seeded eighth, will host No. 9 seed Verona in the first round of the Greater Newark Tournament on May 7 at Bloomfield Middle School field at 7 p.m.
Ed Abplanalp went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBI and Luis Rullan went 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored to lead the Bengals to an 11-3 home win over Montclair on April 27 at Bloomfield Middle School field in a Super Essex Conference-American Division game.
Danny Carter went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Craig Dittrich also went 2-for-3.
Josh Cruz fired a four-hit complete game, allowing three runs, one earned, and three walks and striking out 10.
The Bengals lost to Wayne Valley, 16-10, in a non-conference game on April 28. Carter went 2-for-4 with four RBI; Dionisios Bello went 1-for-3 with two RBI; Rullan went 1-for-3 with three runs and an RBI; Abplanalp had a hit and two RBI; Christopher Veloz had two hits; Brian Rennie and Dittrich each had a hit; and Andrew Altiery went 1-for-3 with two runs.
Rullan went 2-for-4 with two RBI; Veloz went 2-for-3; and Altiery was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the 5-3 win at Demarest on April 30 in a non-conference game. Bello had a double and Carter had a singled and an RBI. Rennie went 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs and Ray Ramos pitched a complete game, allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
Joe Giliberti hit a pinch-hit RBI single to break a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning as BHS beat divisional foe Newark Academy, 6-4, May 2, at Bloomfield Middle School field to move to an 8-9 record. Veloz went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Brian Rennie and Rullan each had two hits.
