Correction: The BHS girls’ team finished sixth overall in the team standings and the BHS boys’ team finished 10th.
BLOOMFIELD – The Bloomfield High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams enjoyed impressive showings at the Essex County Championships held at Woodman Field in Montclair, May 20-21.
The girls’ team finished sixth overall in the girls’ team standings with 29 points, while the boys’ team took 10th in the boys’ team standings with 18 points, based on the top-six finishes in each event.
Mackenzie Presume, a sophomore, won the 800-meter run in 2:18.73 to lead the BHS girls’ team. Presume also took fourth in the 400-meter dash in 57.16.
Aicha Naouai, a sophomore, took second in the javelin at 115-2, while senior Aniyah Allen was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.22 and sixth in the high jump at 4-10.
Myles Toppin, a junior, had a strong meet for the BHS boys’ team as he took second in the high jump at 6 feet-4 inches, third in the long jump at 21-4 and fifth in the triple jump at 43-4. Brandon Fernandes, a junior, also took fifth in the javelin at 155-6 for the Bengals.
The BHS boys’ 4×400-meter relay team took eighth in 3:30.19. Jethro Lewis, a senior, was seventh in the discus at 130-1 for the Bengals.
East Orange Campus HS won the boys’ team title for the second straight season, while Columbia won the girls’ team title for the third straight season and eighth in the past 10 years.
The BHS boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will gear up for the state North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 Championships, May 27-28, at Randolph HS.
