BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The Bloomfield High School boys varsity cross-country team finished its Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division undefeated 10-0 season with a first-place finish Division Championships on Oct. 7 at Branch Brook Park in Newark.
Senior captain Luca Ponticello finished second in the race with a time of 18:14, while junior captain Quaid Mullane finished right behind him in fourth place with a time of 18:20. Both boys received first team Liberty Division honors.
Rendell Amilcar has come on strong at the end of the season to run a 19:39 and Brendan Heaney’s 20:09 propelled the team to victory. Amilcar and Heaney are second team Liberty Division winners.
A first-year runner, senior Matthew Garth earned his spot on the varsity squad and has continued to improve throughout the season. He ran a 20:22 and his finish solidified the win.
Sophomore Robert Wolf and senior Dominic Dominguez, were a huge part of the team’s success this year, but unfortunately were injured before this race. Wolf did receive Liberty Division honorable mention honors for his racing during the regular season.
The boys team will have many returning runners to look forward to for next season. Juniors Jae Trimboli and Anthony Giller, sophomores Fernlee Aquino and Emilio Vasquez and freshman Jack Leard are potential runners to move to the Bengal varsity 7.
The Lady Bengals have fought hard in a competitive SEC-American Division. Honorable mention honors were given to senior captains Lizbeth Morocho and Amanda Giunta.
Both squads will compete on Nov. 1 at their home course of Brookdale Park in the Essex County Championships.
