BLOOMFIELD – The third-seeded Bloomfield High School boys’ varsity volleyball team defeated 14th-seeded Pope John, 25-15, 25-18, in the first round of the state North Jersey Section 1 tournament on May 24 at home.
Jose Bruno-Maldonado had 24 assists; Khalil Naouai had 15 kills; Zac Pekar had eight digs; Noel Shaji had five kills and five digs; Andy Murillo had three assists; Kyle Barrow had two kills; Marc Mathieu had five digs; and Al-Samad Henderson had five kills for the Bengals, who improved to a 24-3 record and will host sixth-seeded Bergen Catholic in the quarterfinals on May 26. The winner will face the winner between No. 2 Wayne Valley and No. 7 Wayne Hills in the semifinals on June 1.
