Bloomfield HS football team blanks Bayonne to move to 6-1 record

BLOOMFIELD (updated Tuesday Nov. 1, 3:03 p.m.) – Brandon Fernandes rushed for 77 yards on 12 carries and scored both of his touchdowns in the first quarter; Ky Bowman also rushed for two touchdowns; and linebacker Danny Carter led a strong defensive effort to lead the Bloomfield High School varsity football team to a 35-0 win over Bayonne on Friday night, Oct. 28, at Foley Field in the inaugural Sam Cavallaro Cup Game.

The Bengals, coming off their first loss of the season the previous week against East Orange Campus, improved to a 6-1 overall record.

Bowman finished with 68 yards rushing on 10 carries. Carter posted 9 ½ tackles in helping the Bengals post their first shutout of the season.

Fernandes scored on runs of 10 yards and 1 yard to give the Bengals a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Victor Saccaro kicked both extra points.

In the second quarter, Bowman scored on a four-yard run and Jared Dockett returned a blocked punt 24 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-0 at the half. Saccaro added the extra points. Carter and Addison Valencia led the charge in blocking the punt.

Bowman ran for a 27-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and Saccaro kicked the point-after. Bayonne moved to a 4-4 mark.

NOTE: Cavallaro was a former head coach at Bloomfield and Bayonne.
