BLOOMFIELD – The Bloomfield High School varsity football team fell to Montclair, 40-14, in the first round of the state North Jersey Section 1, Group 5 playoffs on Friday night, Nov. 11, at Foley Field.
The loss was just the second of the season for the Bengals, who moved to a 7-2 record. Montclair moved to 6-3.
The Bengals hope to get payback when the teams meet in their annual Thanksgiving Day rivalry game at 10:30 in Montclair, which will determine a share of the inaugural North Jersey Super Football Conference-Liberty Blue Division championship. West Orange clinched at least a share of the divisional title.
Montclair jumped out to a 14-0 lead on Daniel Webb’s 60-yard touchdown run and Tarrin Earle’s 11-yard run.
The Bengals cut it to 14-7 later in the first quarter when senior Brandon Fernandes scored on a one-yard run and senior Victor Saccaro kicked the point-after
Earle then scored two touchdowns in the first quarter on an eight-yard pass from Collin Callahan and a 13-yard run to give Montclair a 28-7 lead.
The Bengals scored the only points in the third quarter when senior tight end Danny Carter caught a six-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Ryan Mondo and Saccaro kicked the extra point to cut it to 28-14.
But Webb scored on runs of 1 yard and 12 yards in the fourth quarter.
The Bengals defeated Montclair, 41-27, in last year’s Thanksgiving game at Foley Field to finish 6-4.
