BLOOMFIELD, NJ –The Bloomfield High School varsity football team opened its season in dominant fashion.

Brandon Fernandes ran for three touchdowns, and fellow seniors Khair Bowman and Zavion Stevens each added a touchdown run to power the Bengals to an emphatic 42-6 win over Columbia in the season opener Friday, Sept. 9, at Underhill Field in Maplewood in the debut of the North Jersey Super Football Conference.

Fernandes scored on runs of 16, 12, and 3 yards. Bowman had a 49-yard run TD and Stevens ran for a 26-yard score. Senior Myles Toppin returned an interception 33 yards for a TD for the Bengals. Senior Victor Saccaro was 6-for-6 on extra-point kicks.

The Bengals will host Nutley on Sept. 16 in a NJSFC non-division game. Nutley is 0-1 after losing at West Essex, 27-7, Sept. 9.

The Bengals spoiled the debut of Columbia head coach Gary Mobley. Columbia was playing with heavy hearts after former Columbia head football coach Dave Curtin died in August after a battle with cancer. Curtin, 58, was the head coach at Columbia from 2007-2013. He took a year off in 2011.
