BLOOMFIELD, NJ (updated Sunday Nov. 5, 9:39 a.m.) – The Bloomfield High School varsity football team is on a winning roll,and it comes at a great time as the state playoffs begin next week.
Senior running back Jeremy Whitherspoon rushed for a whopping 279 yards and five touchdowns on 15 carries to power the Bengals to a 48-21 win over Morriston at Foley Field on Friday night, Nov. 3, in a North Jersey Super Football Conference-Liberty Blue Division game.
The Bengals won their third straight game and improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the division.
Michael Williams ran for 52 yards and a TD on four carries for BHS.
Bloomfield jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter on Whitherspoon’s three TD runs of 42, 6, and 51 yards. Morristown scored on a 47-yard run to cut it to 20-7 at the end of the first quarter
Jaiden Williams ran for an 8-yard TD in the second quarter to make it 27-6. After Morristown scored on a 2-yard run, Whitherspoon ran for a 39-yard TD run for a 33-14 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Whitherspoon scored on a run and Rouby Metellus recorded a safety to extend the lead to 41-14.
Michael Williams had an 8-yard TD run in the fourth quarter before Morristown closed outthe scoring on a 23-yard TD run.
Bloomfield rushed for 373 yards. Morristown fell to 2-7.
The Bengals, seeded seventh, will visit second-seeded Passaic County Tech in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 5 state playoffs that begin Nov. 10-11. The winner will face the winner between No. 6 seed North Bergen and No. 3 seed Union City in the semifinals.
