BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The Bloomfield High School swim team kicked off the season against a stout Columbia High School team. Outstanding Bengal girls performances included freshman Summer Harris, who set a new BHS school record for the 100-yard backstroke in her debut high school swim meet. Harris posted a time of 1 minute, 13.50 seconds, breaking the previous record (1:20.58) held by Alexis Laviola.
Harris also posted a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle and the 400 free relay, along with freshman Evangeline Redding and sophomores Katherine Zhao and Jessica Stewart.
Other standout performances were posted by captain Lauren Espiritu, with a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley and a second in 100 butterfly.
The girls 200 medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay consisted of freshman Madison Honegan, Cayla Laviola, Sabine Maculan and Lauren Espiritu. Both relay teams posted a second-place finish.
On the boys side, senior Aly Breikaa scored a first place finish, just 1 second off the record pace for the 200-yard freestyle. He also finished first in the 100 butterfly. Junior Gabe DelFierro placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke and second in the 200 individual medley.
Sophomore Liam Timbie scored a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Breikaa, DelFierro, Timbie and sophomore Jake Lo placed second, nearly breaking last year’s school record.
