Bloomfield HS girls’ basketball team continues to roll

BLOOMFIELD – The Bloomfield High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated Irvington, Orange and Mount Saint Dominic Academy to improve to a stellar 14-2 record.

Junior guard Genesis Collins had 14 points; junior guard Grace Cannon had 11 points and senior forward Aniyah Allen had seven points and seven rebounds to lead the Bloomfield High School girls’ varsity basketball team to a 44-34 come-from-behind home win over Irvington on Feb. 2.

The Bengals trailed 21-18 at halftime, but outscored Irvington, 17-8, in the third quarter, and 9-5 in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore guard Raquel Plata had six points; senior guard Samantha Corio had two points and grabbed four rebounds and sophomore forward Aicha Naouai had two points and three rebounds for BHS.

Cannon had 24 points, five rebounds and four assists to power the Bengals to a 52-26 rout of Orange on Feb. 4 in Orange. Collins had 14 points and Allen had eight rebounds.

Cannon had 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Allen had 12 points and eight rebounds in the 46-30 home win over Mount Saint Dominic Academy on Feb. 6.

The Bengals will begin play in the Essex County Tournament on Feb. 13 when they visit West Orange in the first round. BHS is seeded ninth and West Orange is seeded eighth. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals on Feb. 20 against either No. 1 seed East Orange Campus, No. 16 seed Caldwell or No. 17 seed West Essex.
