Bloomfield HS girls’ basketball team continues to surge

BLOOMFIELD – The Bloomfield High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated St. Vincent Academy and Livingston to remain unbeaten in the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division and improve to a stellar 16-4 overall record.

Senior Aniyah Allen had 12 points and nine rebounds; freshman Kaitlyn Martinez had 11 points and five rebounds; and junior Genesis Collins posted 11 points and four steals in the 57-17 divisional win at St. Vincent Academy on Feb. 16 in Newark.

Freshman Camrynn Referente had 10 points; junior Jalia Santos netted six points; senior Samantha Corio contributed five points and six rebounds; sophomore Grace Perrotta added two points and junior Kasey Coury collected four rebounds.

Junior Grace Cannon scored 24 points and Allen had 12 points and 13 rebounds in the 52-48 divisional win at Livingston on Feb. 18. Collins scored 13 points.

Cannon was nearing 1,000 points for her career, entering the week with 998 points. BHS was scheduled to host Millburn on Feb. 23 in a SEC non-divisional game and host Caldwell on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in divisional play.

The Bengals, seeded third, will host No. 14 seed West Orange in the first round of the state North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 tournament on March 1. The winner will face either No. 11 seed Morris Knolls or No. 6 seed Paterson Eastside in the quarterfinals on March 3.

The Bengals, under head coach Dana Morton, hope to gain payback against West Orange in the postseason. West Orange, seeded eighth, defeated ninth-seeded BHS, 49-46, in overtime in the Essex County Tournament on Feb. 13 in West Orange.
