BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The Bloomfield High School girls’ varsity basketball team continued its winning ways.
The Bengals defeated both Newark Academy and Newark Collegiate Academy before losing to Immaculate Conception of Montclair to move to a 9-5 overall record and 7-2 in the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division.
Samantha Columna had 22 points with six rebounds, six steals and four assists to lead BHS to a 60-53 divisional win over Newark Academy, Jan. 22, in Livingston. Sarah Edmond had 12 points, 18 rebounds, five steals and three assists; Camrynn Referente hd 11 points; Chiara Hilario posted six points; Melina Hidalgo had five points with four rebounds and Lucy Heyman had four points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Sarah Edmond posted 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals to spark the Bengals to 48-41 home win over Newark Collegiate Academy in a divisional game. Hilario had 10 points and five rebounds; Columna had eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals; Referente had seven points; Casey Dolan added two points with four rebounds and Heyman had two points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
BHS fell to Immaculate Conception, 70-51, Jan. 26 in Montclair in a battle of the top two teams i the division. Sarah Edmond had 15 points; Referente hit four 3-pointers for 12 points; Hilario had 11 points; Heyman had seven points and Columna had six points. Immaculate Conception moved to 13-4 overall and sits atop the division at 9-0. BHS is in second place in the division. Both divisional losses have come against Immaculate.
The Bengals hope to make a good run in the 45th Essex County Tournament. The seeding meeting was scheduled for Jan. 28. The brackets will be released Jan. 29.
