BLOOMFIELD, NJ – Senior Sarah Edmond had 16 points and junior Samantha Columna had 11 points to lead the Bloomfield High School girls varsity basketball team to a 44-42 home win over Nutley in a Super Essex Conference crossover game Feb. 2.
The win was the Bengals’ third in a row and improved their record to 12-5. Freshman Lucy Heyman had six points; senior Camrynn Referente had five points; freshman Chiara Hilario had four points and junior Gina Perrotta added two points.
The Bengals received the No. 12 seed in the 45th Essex County Tournament and will host No. 28 seed Montclair Kimberley Academy in the preliminary third round Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. The winner will advance to the first round (round of 16) Feb. 9 at No. 5 seed Immaculate Conception of Montclair. The quarterfinals are Feb. 16 at the higher-seeded sites. The semifinals are Feb. 20 at Weequahic HS in Newark and the final is Feb. 23 at Essex County College in Newark.
In earlier action, sophomore Asiyah Edmond had 17 points and Sarah Edmond had 14 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and six steals to lead the BHS to a 59-21 home win over Montclair, Jan. 30, in a Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division game.
Hilario had 11 points and Columna had eight points, 15 steals, six rebounds and five assists for the Bengals.
Referente led the Bengals with 17 points in the 50-44 home win over Fair Lawn, Jna. 31 at home. Columna had 12 points and nine rebounds; Sarah Edmond had seven points and 10 rebounds; Heyman and sophomore Melina Hildago each had four points and three rebounds; and Hilario also had four points.
