UPDATE: Bloomfield HS girls’ basketball team tops West Essex; falls to Nutley

BLOOMFIELD – Genesis Collins, a junior guard, had 13 points and senior forward Aniyah Allen had 10 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and three blocks to lead the Bloomfield High School girls’ varsity basketball team to a 39-32 win at West Essex on Jan. 26 in North Caldwell. Sophomore guard Raquel Plata scored eight points; junior guard Grace Cannon had six points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists; sophomore forward Aicha Naouai had two points, four rebounds and two assists; and senior guard Samantha Corio grabbed three rebounds.

The Bengals led 21-18 at halftime and outscored West Essex, 10-7, in the third quarter and 8-7 in the fourth.

The Bengals’ eight-game winning streak came to end with a 51-45 loss at Nutley on Jan. 29. Allen had 13 points and 12 rebounds; Cannon had 13 points and four rebounds; Naouai had seven points and six rebounds; Plata netted six points; Collins added four points and senior forward Gracielle Richards chipped in two points. BHS moved to an 11-2 record.

The ninth-seeded Bengals will visit No. 8 seed West Orange in the first round of the 42nd Essex County Tournament on Feb. 13.
The winner will visit top-seeded and defending champion East Orange Campus in the quarterfinals on Feb. 20.
