Bloomfield HS girls’ tennis team has competitive season

BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The Bloomfield High School varsity girls’ tennis team had a competitive season, finishing 5-5 in the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division.

Three of the division losses were 3-2 nail-biters, two against co-division champions Nutley and West Orange.

“This shows me how close we were to winning our division,” said BHS head coach Ron Masson.

All three BHS singles players made First Team All-SEC-Colonial Division: Lauryn Mensah, Margarita Maligaya, and Beltide Mensah. The BHS first doubles team of Rushika Barvalia and ManLing SituHuang was voted Second Team All-SEC-Colonial.

Lauryn Mensah qualified for the state singles tournament.

Another highlight for the team was the 3-2 victory over Caldwell, as well as exciting matches against Nutley, West Orange, and Belleville, noted Masson.

“We had a close-knit group of girls who supported one another throughout the season,” Masson said.

Two players return next year in Beltide Mensah and Barvalia, along with freshman Nicole Kovalenko. “We are also looking forward to what I have been told is a strong group of eighth-graders,” said Masson, whose team finished with a 6-10 overall record.
