UPDATED: Bloomfield HS girls’ volleyball team seeks solid run in the ECT

BLOOMFIELD, NJ (updated Tuesday Oct. 17, 10:33 a.m.) – The Bloomfield High School varsity girls’ volleyball team seeks a strong run in the Essex County Tournament.

The sixth-seeded Lady Bengals will host a first-round match on Saturday, Oct. 21, at noon against either No. 11 seed Cedar Grove, No. 22 seed Bloomfield Tech or No. 23 seed University. Cedar Grove defeated No. 34 seed Christ the King Prep in the first preliminary round and was scheduled to host the winner of Bloomfield Tech versus University in the second preliminary round by Oct. 19.

The quarterfinals will be held at the higher seeds on or by Oct. 24. The semifinals will be held Oct. 26 at Livingston and the championship is set for Saturday, Oct. 28, at Bloomfield High School at 2 p.m.

BHS had its five-game winning streak end with a 25-16, 25-22 home loss to Caldwell on Thursday, Oct. 12. Senior outside hitter/co-captain Melissa Marte had 12 kills, five digs, and two assists and senior setter/co-captain Kourtni Carty had 13 assists and five digs; senior outside hitter/co-captain Aicha Naouai had seven digs and senior libero Megan Alicea had three digs for BHS.

The Bengals then fell to Union Catholic, 25-18, 25-20, Monday, Oct. 16, in Scotch Plains to move to a 9-6 record. Carty had 10 assists and eight digs; Naouai had six kills and seven digs; Marte posted six kills; Alicea notched three digs.
