BLOOMFIELD, NJ (corrected Tuesday Oct. 10, 2:47 p.m.) – The Bloomfield High School varsity girls’ volleyball team defeated Nutley, 25-16, 25-18, Monday, Oct. 9, at home for its sixth straight victory to improve to a 9-4 record.
Senior outside hitter/co-captain Melissa Marte had five kills and 10 digs; senior setter/co-captain Kourtni Carty had 13 assists, four digs and two kills and senior outside hitter Aicha Naoua had seven kills and four digs for the Bengals. Senior defensive specialist/libero Megan Alicea had five digs; sophomore defensive specialist/libero Ciara Berutti notched four aces; junior outside hitter Sarah Edmond had two kills, two blocks and two digs; senior setter/defensive specialist Niav Berutti added two digs and junior middle blocker Sarah Pierre posted three blocks and one kill; and sophomore middle blocker Sheyenne Williams added one block for BHS.
In the previous match, the Bengals defeated Belleville, 25-9, 21-25, 25-12, Oct. 6, in Belleville. Marte had 11 kills and seven digs; junior Lara Rios had nine digs; Carty posted 15 assists, five digs and two aces; Naouai had eight kills and five digs; Niav Berutti had four aces and five digs; and junior setter Olivia Brzostek had five assists.
In earlier play, BHS rallied to beat Montclair, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, Oct. 5, in Montclair. Carty had 22 assists and 12 digs; Marte had 14 kills and 10 digs; and Naouai had 13 digs, four kills and four aces. Pierre had six blocks; Alicea had six digs; Edmond had six digs and four kills; Williams posted four blocks and Ciarra Berutti had five digs.
