Bloomfield HS girls’ volleyball team wins SEC-Liberty Division title

BLOOMFIELD, NJ (updated Wednesday Oct. 25, 11:51 a.m.) – The Bloomfield High School varsity girls’ volleyball team defeated Newark Academy, 25-17, 25-20, at home to clinch the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division title on Oct. 19.

Kourtni Carty had 17 assists and eight digs; Aicha Naouai had eight kills and four digs; Melissa Marte had seven kills and five digs; and Sarah Pierre had three blocks.

The sixth-seeded Bengals also defeated No. 11 seed Cedar Grove, 25-13, 25-10, Oct. 21, at home in the first round of the Essex County Tournament. Naouai had eight kills, Carty had 10 assists and five digs and Marte had four kills and five digs.

The Bengals lost to third-seeded Livingston, 25-11, 25-10, in the ECT quarterfinals on Oct. 24 in Livingston. The loss ended the Bengals’ four-match win streak and moved their record to 13-7.

BHS defeated Nutley, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, Oct. 23. Carty had 36 assists; Marte had 20 kills and 10 digs; and Sarah Edmond and Pierre each had seven kills.

In earlier action, Carty hd 15 assists and Marte had 11 kills and eight digs in the 25-18, 25-22 win at North 13th St.Tech on Oct. 18 in Newark. Megan Alicea had seven digs and Pierre posted three kills for BHS.

The ECT championship match is Saturday, Oct. 28, at Bloomfield HS at 2 p.m.
