Bloomfield HS girls wrestling team captures inaugural Essex County Tournament championship

The Bloomfield High School girls wrestling team rejoices together after winning the inaugural Essex County Tournament title on Friday, Feb. 16, at Nutley High School.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The Bloomfield High School girls wrestling team captured the inaugural girls wrestling Essex County Tournament championship on Friday, Feb. 16, at Nutley High School.

Bloomfield had 165 points, taking first place among the 11 scoring teams.

Senior Ahlexa Montalvo (120-pound weight class), senior Madelyn McLaughlin (132), sophomore Leanna Noel (145) and sophomore Saharia Quamina (235) each took first place in their weight classes to lead the Bengals.

The second-place finishers for BHS were senior Alyssandra Montalvo (126), freshman Chloe Jean (152) and freshman Lesly Sanchez (235), while sophomore Natalie Lopez (107), senior Victoria Feliciano (138) and junior Destiny Lopez (165) each finished third. Sophomores Alani Garcia (100) and Mia Andujar (165) each finished fifth.

BHS head coach Ryan Smircich was elated for his team.

“I’m so proud of the girls,” said Smirich, noting that McLaughlin has an ‘amazing’ GPA and is “tough as nails. Leanna Noel is also a standout sophomore who is going to make some noise this year as always. Sahara Quamina will be at the state tournament, hopefully,  and ready to make her own noise.”
