BLOOMFIELD – For three decades, head coach Bob Mayer has guided the Bloomfield High School varsity softball program, leading the Bengals to several successful seasons.
On Saturday, April 23, Mayer joined an exclusive club. The Bengals defeated Memorial of West New York, 12-3, in the Clifton Classic to give Mayer his 500th career victory.
Mayer, who has been at the Bengals helm since 1990, became the eighth softball coach in state history to reach that milestone.
Many of Mayer’s former players were in attendance. For Mayer, that was especially nice to see.
“That’s kind of what it’s all about; the relationships with the kids,” said Mayer. “I’ve made a lot of friends with the parents and the kids who have become adults, so it’s gratifying that way.”
BHS athletic director Steve Jenkins stated, “Coach Mayer is as unassuming an individual as you will ever find, but his impact on the athletes and students of Bloomfield stretches across generations.”
Senior Samantha Corio went 4-for-5 with a homer and four RBI and senior Courtney Politz went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI to lead the Bengals.
Sophomore Ayana Andrade-Zygmunt went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs and sophomore Kim Zapata went 2-for-3 with two runs. Junior Kasey Courey also had a double.
The Bengals then defeated host team Clifton, 6-3, in their second game of the day. Corio fired a three-hitter with six strikeouts, and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Junior Jalia Santos had two hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs; Politz went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Senior Crystal Rodriguez also hit a double for the Bengals, who improved to a 6-7 record.
