BLOOMFIELD – Senior Courtney Politz fired a complete game five-hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk, and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run to lead the seventh-seeded Bloomfield High School varsity baseball team to a 3-1 win over 10th-seeded Verona in the first round of the Essex County Tournament at Clarks Pond South field on Monday, May 9.
Senior Samantha Corio went 1-for-1 with an RBI and junior Kasey Coury had an RBI for the Bengals. Ayana Zygmunt-Andrade and fellow sophomore Desiree Ramos each went 1-for-2 with a run and sophomore Rachelle Ramirez had a triple for the Bengals, who improved to an 8-12 record.
The Bengals will visit second-seeded West Essex in the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 14, in North Caldwell at 11 a.m. The winner will face the winner of third-seeded Nutley and sixth-seeded Cedar Grove in the semifinals on May 20 at Mike Sheppard Sr. field at Ivy Hill Park in Newark.
