Bloomfield HS softball team falls to Kearny in state sectional tourney first round to finish season

BLOOMFIELD – Jalia Santos, a junior, went 1-for-3 with two RBI; sophomore Kristina Collins went 2-for-3 with a run and junior Kasey Coury went 2-for-4, but the Bloomfield High School varsity softball team lost at second-seeded Kearny, 4-3, in the first round of the state North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 tournament on May 23.

Senior Courtney Politz allowed two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts for the Bengals, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and finished the season with a 12-14 record. BHS went 11-3 in non-Super Essex Conference play.

In earlier action, the Bengals defeated West Orange, 3-1, May 18, at West Orange in a SEC non-division game. Samantha Corio, a senior, scattered seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks for the win. At the plate, Corio went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Collins went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Santos had a hit and an RBI.

Corio went 2-for-2 with an RBI and was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts and no walks to lead the Bengals to a 6-4 win at Caldwell on May 19 in an SEC non-division game. Collins went 2-for-4; Santos hit a two-run single for a 6-3 lead in the fifth inning; and junior Kasey Coury and senior Crystal Rodriguez each had a hit for the Bengals.

Santos went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and a double to lead the Bengals to a 13-0 win over Newark East Side on May 20 at Clarks Pond South in a Super Essex Conference non-division game.

Corio went 2-for-3 with two doubles; Coury went 3-for-4 with an RBI; and Rodriguez and Courtney Politz each had two RBi to lead the Bengals. Corio pitched three innings with eight strikeouts and Politz pitched two innings with four strikeouts in the five-inning game.

BHS head coach Bob Mayer won his 500th career game on April 23 against Memorial in the Clifton Invitational. Mayer now has 507 career victories.
