Bloomfield HS wrestling team enjoys stellar performance at District 9 tournament

BLOOMFIELD, NJ – Bloomfield High School varsity wrestling team enjoyed a stellar performance at the District 9 tournament at Nutley HS, Saturday, Feb. 16.

The Bengals finished in third place out of nine teams in the team standings. BHS had 132.5 points. Delbarton won the team title with 312.5 points. Livingston was second with 144 points.

In addition, BHS head coach Ryan Smircich was named the District 9 Coach of the Year.

Kevin Adorno, a senior, won the 145-pound title to lead the Bengals. Freshman Gerald VanBaelen (113-pound division), sophomore Zachary Andruchowitz (182) and junior Jeff Diaz (285 heavyweight) each took second.

Junior Jacob Febo (120), senior Paul Flores (132), and senior avon Whitehead (220) each finished in third place.

The seven BHS wrestlers advanced to the Region 3 tournament at West Orange HS, Feb. 20, 22-23. The region tournaments consist of the top three finishers in each weight class from the district tournaments.

Junior Tamil Fernandes (126) and senior James Dameus (195) each finished in fourth place for the Bengals.
