BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The Bloomfield High School varsity wrestling team, under second-year head coach Ryan Smircich, concluded an historic regular season.

The Bengals hosted a quad meet on Feb. 9, winning all three matches to finish with a 22-6 dual-meet record, the most wins in school history in a season. Bloomfield defeated Rutherford, 55-15; Glen Ridge, 72-9; and Union, 68-12.

In addition, the Bengals won the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division title with an undefeated 8-0 divisional mark.

The quad meet came on the heels of a narrow 33-30 loss to sixth-seeded Livingston in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 5 state tournament, Feb. 4, at BHS. Bloomfield was the No. 3 seed. Livingston, which also beat Bloomfield in the season opener, 37-30, Dec. 19 at BHS, went on to lose to top-seeded Passaic County Tech in the sectional final Feb. 8.

The Bengals will gear up for the NJSIAA District 9 tournament at Nutley High School this Saturday, Feb. 16.

The Bengals’ success this season has been certainly enjoyable.

“This was a fun year to be a head coach,” Smircich said. “The kids on the team are such great kids who come from great households. It was great being around their families. As a team, we made strides a little quicker than I anticipated. Some credit needs to go to Bloomfield’s recreation department for creating programs, and to the recreation coaches who work tirelessly to improve the Bloomfield wrestling community. I am excited to see the kids in the individual tournament starting Saturday.”
