BLOOMFIELD, NJ – Bloomfield High School 2013 graduate Marcell Lazard is getting ready for his redshirt junior season for the West Virginia University football team.
The WVU Mountaineers will open the season this Saturday, Sept. 3, against Missouri at home at noon. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
Lazard, a 6-foot-6, 308-pound offensive tackle, played in 13 games last season with six starts as the Mountaineers finished with an 8-5 record, winning five of their final six games, capped by the 43-42 victory over Arizona State in the Cactus Bowl.
Lazard helped pave the way for an offense that averaged 479.7 yards per game of total offense, 34.0 points per game, 228.2 yards rushing per game and 251.5 passing yards per game. The WVU offense ranked No. 17 nationally in rushing offense, No. 18 in first down offense, No. 23 in total offense and No. 35 in scoring offense.
In his senior season, Lazard was a member of the 2012 BHS football team that won its first state playoff game in the modern playoff era en route to advancing to the state North Jersey Section 1, Group 5 championship game at MetLife Stadium where the Bengals lost a heartbreaking 16-13 double-overtime decision to Montclair, their Thanksgiving Day rival. The Bengals finished 9-3 that season, with the other losses to Seton Hall Prep in a 42-41 barnburner and to Montclair, 14-7, on Thanksgiving.
