JERSEY CITY, NJ — New Jersey City University freshman power forward Sarah Edmond, a 2019 Bloomfield High School graduate, has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week the league office announced on Jan. 20.
The award is for week 11 of the 2019-20 season for games played January 13-19.
Edmond is the first Gothic Knight to receive an NJAC weekly honor this season and the first NJCU women’s player to be selected NJAC Rookie of the Week since week two of the 2018-19 season when Jasmine Reese (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was honored.
NJCU women’s basketball is in playoff position midway through the NJAC schedule, seeking its first NJAC Tournament berth since 1989, and has won three consecutive conference games for the first time since January 2002.
Edmond continues to be a big contributor for NJCU. In a pair of starts, the 5-foot-7 Criminal Justice major averaged a double-double with 10.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, 2.5 assists and 1.0 blocks per game. She shot .444 from the field (8-18 FG).
On Jan. 15 in a 68-64 overtime road win at Ramapo, Edmond continued her dominance on the glass with 14 rebounds while contributing eight points, two assists, and two steals.
Three days later on Jan. 18 in a dominant 67-57 win over Rutgers-Camden, the Knights held Camden scoreless for more than 10-and-a-half minutes between the second and third quarters, manufacturing runs of 19-0 and 22-2 to build a 20-point lead. Edmond tallied a career-high 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, adding six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Edmond put back an offensive rebound to give NJCU a 17-12 margin at the end of the first quarter and her jumper early in the third quarter pushed the run to 15-0. Edmond had her second double-digit scoring effort of the season.
On the season, Edmond has played and started all 10 games in which she was healthy and has produced averages of 7.9 rebounds, 6.6 points, 2.8 steals and 1.5 assists per game while shooting .375 from the field (27-72). She has averaged 28.7 minutes per game. If she played enough games to qualify, Edmond would rank seventh in the NJAC in rebounding and first among freshmen.
