ORANGE, NJ – The 10th Annual Orange High School M.L.K. Basketball Classic will be held Monday, Jan. 21.
The schedule is as follows:
Girls
OHS vs. Newark West Side, 11 a.m.
Boys
Barringer vs. West Orange, 1 p.m.
Newark Tech vs. American History, 3 p.m.
Orange vs. East Orange Campus, 5 p.m.
Admission is charged.
The OHS Tornadoes and EOCHS Jaguars have met in the M.L.K. Classic in each year since 2012. The Jaguars won last year’s meeting, 46-45, on a tip-in at the buzzer. EOCHS won five meetings including last year, while OHS won in 2013 and 2017.
EOCHS has bounced back from a slow start to the season.
The Jaguars defeated Paterson Eastside, 52-45, Jan. 10 for their third win in four games to improve to a 3-6 record. Junior Izaiah Poole scored 18 points with five rebounds, four assists and three steals; junior Nasir Owens had nine points; junior Justin Singh-Smith had seven points and nine rebounds; senior Kevin Louine had seven points; and senior Mario Gunn had four points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
OHS hopes to make more progress.
Junior forward Giovanni Peterkin scored 14 points in a 52-44 loss to Barringer. Sophomore point guard Hassan Hester and senior guard James Simeon each had seven points for the Tornadoes, who fell to 1-7 on the season. Rhalik Reid had five points and junior guard Elijah Thompson and sophomore forward Lou Julien each had four points.
OHS fell to Wayne Valley, 66-41, Jan. 12 in Old Tappan. Junior guard Nyzeek Mann had seven points; Reid, Thompson and Simeon each had six points; Hester had five points and Peterkin had four. The Tornadoes fell to 1-8.
