EAST ORANGE (updated Mon. May 30, 9:15 a.m.) – Cory Poole won four gold medals to lead the East Orange Campus High School boys’ track and field team to a share of the team title with Elizabeth HS at the state North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 Championships at Ridge HS in Basking Ridge, May 27-28.
The Jaguars and Elizabeth each had 81 points based on the top six finishes in each event.
For the Jaguars, under first-year head coach Lance Wigfall, it marked the second straight year they have been crowned as North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 team champions.
Poole, a junior, won the 400-meter run (48.30), the 110-meter high hurdles (13.85) and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (53.27) for the second straight year. Poole also was part of the winning 4×400-meter relay that clocked 3:16.91. The other runners on the relay were sophomore Immyouri Etienne and brothers Akeem Lindo and Willesley Lindo.
In the 100-meter dash, Akeem Lindo, a sophomore, was fourth (11.18) and freshman teammate Dominic Dazzell was fifth (11.38). Akeem Lindo also was second in the 110 hurdles (14.29) and third in the 400 intermediate hurdles (53.55).
Willesley Lindo, a junior, took sixth in the 200-meter dash (22.85) and third in the 400-meter run (48.85).
Etienne also was fourth in the 400-meter run (48.95) and fifth in the 800-meter run (1:59.89). Sophomore Ibrahim Fobay was fifth in the 400 intermediate hurdles (55.38).
Senior Charon Jenkins was third in the triple jump at 44-5 ½.
On the girls’ side, EOCHS finished eighth in the team standings with 25 points. Columbia won the team title with 114 points.
Sophomore Kevaray Gilette won the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.05 and took fourth in the 400 intermediate hurdles in 1:04.28 for the Jaguars.
Gilette joined seniors Adelia Francis and Mary Pierre-Louis and freshman Mellica Gordon in the 4×100-meter relay to finish in second place in 48.93. The same four runners took sixth in the 4×400 in 4:05.42. Gordon also was fifth in the 100-meter dash in 12.62.
The top six finishers in each event at the sectionals qualified for the state Group 4 Championships at Egg Harbor, June 3-4.
The EOCHS boys’ team won the Essex County Championships team title for the second straight year the previous week, May 21. The Jaguars also won the Essex County Relays team title and the Super Essex Conference-American Division Championships team title this season.
