EAST ORANGE – The East Orange Campus High School boys’ track and field team has continued its dominance.
A week after winning the Essex County Relay Championships team title for the first time, the Jaguars captured the Super Essex Conference-American Division Championships team crown on May 14 at Schools Stadium in Newark.
The Jaguars, under first-year head coach and EOCHS alum Lance Wigfall, had 120 points. Seton Hall Prep was second with 114 points, followed by Columbia with 81, West Orange with 73, Montclair, Millburn and Irvington.
Cory Poole won three events to lead the Jaguars. He won the 200-meter dash in 22.34; the 110 hurdles in 14.03 and the 400 hurdles in 52.62.
Charon Jenkins won the triple jump at 44 feet-1 inch and took fourth in the high jump at 5-10. Treymont Carter won the shot put at 47-½ and took third in the discus at 127-3.
In the 100 dash, Akeem Lindon was second in 11.25; Dominic Dazzel was fourth in 11.53 and Chris Wilson was sixth in 11.73. Lindo was second in the 200 in 22.38 behind Poole.
In the 400-meter dash, Immyouri Etienne was second in 49.32; Willesley Lindo, Akeem’s brother, was third in 49.44 and Mujahid Camel was sixth in 51.53
Akeem Lindo also was second in the 110 hurdles in 14.52 behind Poole. Ibrahim Fobay was fifth in the 110 hurdles in 15.85 and third in the 400 hurdles in 56.71.
Winning the team title “felt good,” said Wigfall. “It showed how deep and how competitive my team is. We spread out the entire team, not running everyone in their strongest events. It was just a true testament of how the team grew and how running the jayvee kids early in the season to get that experience, worked.”
Camel and Wilson, both football players, have made significant progress throughout the season, said Wigfall. They listened to the coaching staff every day, and as a result, came away with great finishes at the SEC meet, Wigfall said.
On the girls’ side, EOCHS finished fifth in the team standings among the six teams. Montclair won the team title.
Mary Pierre-Louis was second in the 100-meter dash in 12.80 and third in the 200 in 26.36; Kevaray Gilette was second in both the 100 hurdles in 16.08 and 400 hurdles in 1:04.73; the 4×400-meter relay team was second in 4:06.26 and Aliyah Campbell was sixth in the shot put at 34-8 ¼ to lead the Jaguars.
Wigfall said the program dedicated the meet title in memory of Horace Hooper, who recently passed away. Hooper, a track athlete for East Orange High School many years ago, was an inspiration to Wigfall and other Essex County coaches.
The Jaguars will gear up for the Essex County Championships, May 20-21, at Woodman Field in Montclair.
