EAST ORANGE – Marquise Kindel had 26 points and nine rebounds and Zack Williams had 19 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks to lead the sixth-seeded East Orange Campus High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 67-57 upset win over third-seeded University in the Essex County Tournament quarterfinals in Newark on Feb. 20.
Jordan Taylor had 12 points and seven assists; Mekhi Chester had four points; and Anton Lawrence and Arthur Mitchell each had three points for the Jaguars, who won their sixth straight game to improve to a 15-8 record.
The Jaguars were scheduled face second-seeded Newark East Side in the ECT semifinals doubleheader at West Orange High School on Feb. 23. The other semifinal pitted top-seeded Seton Hall Prep against fifth-seeded Newark West Side. The final is Feb. 27 at Essex County College at 1 p.m.
The Jaguars are looking to reach the ECT final for the second straight year. Last season, the Jaguars lost to SHP in the championship.
In earlier action, Lawrence had 16 points, eight assists and five steals and Williams had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the 75-35 home win over Montclair Kimberley Academy on Feb. 16. Shyid Daniels had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals; Chester recorded eight points and five rebounds; Kindel had seven points and five rebounds; Randy Joseph had six points; Taylor had five points and Dwight Pressly added four points.
Kindel scored 20 points and Williams had 15 points in the 51-47 win at Montclair on Feb. 18. Chester had nine points and Lawrence added four points.
EOCHS, seeded 12th, will visit fifth-seeded Woodbridge in the first round of the state North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 tournament on March 1. Last season, EOCHS lost to Paterson Eastside in the Section 1, Group 4 tournament championship game.
