Jaguars fall to surging West Orange team

EAST ORANGE, NJ (updated Tuesday Nov. 8, 12:14 p.m.) – The East Orange Campus High School varsity football team, under second-year head coach Al-Majid Hutchins, will host Elizabeth in the first round of the state North Jersey Section 2, Group 5 playoffs on Friday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m.

EOCHS is seeded No. 4. Elizabeth, which has a 4-5 record, is seeded No. 5. The winner will face the winner between No. 8 seed Columbia and No. 1 seed Bridgewater-Raritan in the semifinals.

The Jaguars fell to a surging West Orange High School team, 33-14, Saturday night, Nov. 5, at WOHS’ Joe Suriano Stadium in a North Jersey Super Football Conference-LIberty Blue Division game. The loss ended the Jaguars’ two-game winning streak and moved their record to 5-3.

West Orange won its fifth straight game to move to a 6-3 record.

West Orange moved to first place in the division at 5-1. Bloomfield (7-1 overall) and Montclair (5-3) are tied for second at 4-1 and EOCHS is in fourth place at 3-3.

Former Jaguar CJ Wilson rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries to lead West Orange. Wilson transferred to West Orange in September.

Junior quarterback Q’uran Dixon threw two touchdown passes for the Jaguars.

In the first quarter, Michael Osuji had a 10-yard touchdown run for West Orange. The extra point kick failed.

The Jaguars answered as Dixon threw a five-yard touchdown pass to senior Naseem White. The extra point kick was good to give the Jaguars a 7-6 lead.

In the second quarter, CJ Onyechi scored on a 10-yard touchdown run and Ryan Carraha kicked the extra point to give WOHS a 13-7 ead. Wilson had a five-yard touchdown run later in the second quarter to make it 19-7. The extra point kick failed.

Dixon threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior Fayeson Carney. The extra point kick was good to cut it to 19-14 in the second quarter.

Wilson scored on a 14-yard touchdown and Carraha kicked the extra point for a 26-14 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Wilson ran for a 25-yard touchdown and Carraha kicked the extra point.
