East Orange Campus HS girls’ basketball team advances to ECT quarterfinals

EAST ORANGE, NJ – The fourth-seeded East Orange Campus High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated No. 13 seed Newark Collegiate Academy, 55-41, in the first round of the Essex County Tournament on Feb. 10.

Brianna Turner had 27 points, eight rebounds and six steals; Brianna Mills had 13 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals and Destiny Battle had 11 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and five steals for the Jaguars, who improved to an 11-7 record.

The Jaguars will host fifth-seeded Immaculate Conception of Montclair in the quarterfinals on Feb. 17. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Feb. 21 at Weequahic HS in Newark against the winner of No. 1 seed University and No. 9 seed Verona.

In earlier action, Mills had 20 points and Cinderella Hamilton posted 11 points, 13 rebounds and five steals in the 56-39 home win over Montclair on Feb. 6 in a Super Essex Conference game. Turner had 14 points and Battle recorded eight points and seven steals.

East Orange Campus received the No. 11 seed in the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 state tournament and will visit No. 6 seed and defending champion Franklin in the first round on Feb. 27. East Orange defeated Franklin to win the North 2, Group 4 title in 2016. They lost to Franklin in the NJSIAA Group 4 in the state semifinals in 2015. Franklin also beat EOCHS in the North 2, Group 4 final in 2014. Franklin won both the Group 4 state title and state Tournament of Champions title last season.
