EAST ORANGE, NJ – Throughout the season, Akeem Lindo showed that he is arguably the best high school boys’ hurdler in the state.
On the state’s biggest stage, the East Orange Campus High School senior proved that status.
Lindo won both the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association State Meet of Champions held at Northern Burlington Regional HS in Columbus on Saturday, June 9.
Lindo clocked 13.71 in the 110-meter hurdles and 52.28 in the 400-meter hurdles. Both times are ranked No. 1 in the state this season. His 52.28 time in the 400 hurdles is ranked No. 3 in the nation this season.
It marked the third straight year that EOCHS swept the hurdles events at the Meet of Champions. Cory Poole, a 2017 EOCHS graduate who is now at the University of Florida, won the hurdles events in 2016 and 2017.
The Jaguars also posted other medals at the MOC.
Al-Tariq Dunson, a senior, followed Lindo with a third-place medal in the 110-meter hurdles in a season-best 13.78.
The 4×100-meter relay and 4×400-meter relay each earned a third-place medal. The 4×100 finished a season-best 52.28 and the 4×400 finished 3:17.38. EOCHS was looking to win the 4×400 title at the MOC for the second year in a row. At the 2016 MOC, EOCHS finished second in the 4×400.
Kishaun Richardson, a junior, earned the fifth-place medal in the 400-meter dash in 48.67.
Ibrahim Fobay, a senior, finished 12th in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.31.
For the girls, Kevaray Gillettte was the lone competitor for EOCHS. The senior clocked a season-best 14.37 in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles to finish third. Then in the finals of the 100 hurdles, Gillette earned the seventh-place medal in a time of 14.65.
Gillette also nearly medalled in the 400-meter hurdles. She finished ninth in 1:02.98. The top eight finishers in each event earned medals.
The MOC consisted of the top two finishers in each event, plus wild-card berths, from the NJSIAA Group State meets.
The Jaguars will gear for the New Balance Nationals, June 15-17, at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. Lindo will continue his track and field career at North Carolina A&T.
At the MOC, Tatayanna Beckford was the lone Orange High School competitor. She finished 25th in the javelin event with a throw of 98 feet-11 inches.
