Orange HS baseball team tops East Orange Campus to win annual Unity Cup Game for fifth straight year

ORANGE, NJ – The Orange High School varsity baseball team defeated East Orange Campus High School, 7-3, in the eighth annual Unity Cup Game between the two schools on Wednesday, May 23, at Monte Irvin Field at Central Avenue Playground.

The home team led 4-0 after three innings.  EOCHS scored one run in the fourth, before Orange scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 7-1 lead. East Orange closed the game by scoring two in seventh for the final score.

The Tornadoes were led by Joshua Fields, who went 2-for-3 with a double, four RBI, one run, and Adam Tizio, who also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.  David Johnson Guzman added a double and two runs. Fields pitched a complete game for the win, striking out 10, walking four, while allowing three runs and seven hits over seven innings.

EOCHS was led by Avery Phill, who singled, doubled and scored, and Elieh Carrington, who singled twice.

OHS, under head coach Wally Boyett, won the Unity Cup for the fifth straight season and seventh time in the eight years since inception of the Unity Cup Game. EOCHS’ lone win in the Unity Cup came in 2013.

2017: OHS won, 12-1

2018: OHS won, 7-3

Note:  The Unity Cup Baseball Challenge began in 2011.  It was created to strengthen relationships between the two local communities and to make a statement against cultural, racial and religious intolerances. It also provides the perfect opportunity to play a meaningful baseball game that creates excitement between the two cities.

Orange also ended its season on a winning note, Friday, May 25, with a 7-6 victory at Newark Arts.
