Glen Ridge HS baseball team defeats Secaucus to advance to North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament final

GLEN RIDGE (updated Thur. June 2, 2:04 p.m.) – The second-seeded Glen Ridge High School varsity baseball team defeated 11th-seeded Secaucus, 5-1, May 31, at Hurrell Field to advance to the state North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament final.

The Ridgers, who improved to a 12-12 record, will visit top-seeded Bloomfield Tech in the final on June 3 at the Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell at 3:30 p.m. GRHS is making its first sectional final appearance since 1994 and seeks its first sectional title since 1993.

The Ridgers scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. Keeler Patton and Owen Hannigan each had RBI singles; Griffin Cancro had an RBI double; Matt Buchmann had a bases-loaded walk and the other run was scored on an error. GRHS sent 11 men to the plate in the inning.

Secaucus scored a run in the top of the second.

Matt Myles pitched four innings for the win.  

The Ridgers, under first-year head coach Liam Penberthy, defeated seventh-seeded Weehawken, 2-0, in the quarterfinals on May 26 after beating 15th-seeded Weequahic, 10-0, in the first round May 23, both at Hurrell Field.
