Glen Ridge HS baseball team to host Weehawken in state sectional tourney quarterfinals

GLEN RIDGE – The second-seeded Glen Ridge High School varsity baseball team will host seventh-seeded Weehawken in the quarterfinals of the state North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament today, May 26, at 4 p.m. at Hurrell Field.

If the Ridgers win, they will host the winner between third-seeded Technology and 11th-seeded Secaucus in the semifinals on May 31. The final is June 3. The top seed is Bloomfield Tech, which will play ninth-seeded Shabazz in the quarterfinals.

GRHS, under first-year head coach Liam Penberthy, defeated 15th-seeded Weequahic, 10-0, in the first round May 23 at Hurrell Field to improve to a 10-12 record.

In earlier action, the Ridgers defeated Belleville, 8-2, May 17, in Belleville in a Super Essex Conference non-division game. Carter Crutchfield went 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored and Brian Schnack went 3-for-3 to lead the Ridgers.

Keeler Patton had a solo home run and Matt Buchmann had two hits and one RBI as the Ridgers snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Ridgers then lost to both Verona, 6-0, May 18, and Montclair Kimberley Academy, 10-5, May 19, each on the road in SEC-Liberty Division action.
