Glen Ridge HS baseball team wins four straight to move to 8-6

GLEN  RIDGE – First-year head coach Liam Penberthy has to be happy with the performances this season from his Glen Ridge High School baseball.

And if the coach is happy with the season, then he is certainly pleased with the team’s recent play as the Ridgers went 4-0 last week to improve their record now to 8-6.

“We’ve definitely been playing good ball as of late,” he said.

Highlighting the week, Penberthy’s group gave Columbia its first loss in the Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division this year with a 6-5 walk off win on April 25 at home.

In the victory, GRHS was led by Carter Crutchfield, who hit the game winning RBI with a single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“That was certainly a huge win for our program,” he said.

In their next game, Penberthy’s team then carried that momentum with them for a 19-1 win against N. 13th St. on April 27.

In the five inning effort, Penberthy said James Malik went the distance not allowing any earned runs for the win.

Following that win, Glen Ridge then claimed another victory win a 13-6 win against Newark East Side on April 29.

In that triumph, the team received a complete game from pitcher Grant Taylor.

Penberthy said his team then traveled to West Essex where the team claimed another victory with a 5-3 win on May 2.

In that win, the Ridgers were led by Hannigan (two innings), Malik (3.2 innings), Crutchfield (1.1 innings) on the mound, while Mac Kortrey sparked the offense with three RBI.

Looking ahead, Penberthy said his 14th-seeded team would face third-seeded Nutley in the first round of the Greater Newark Tournament on Friday, May 6, at 4 p.m.
